HER PLIGHT

sati
Denounced as witches and burnt by Christians
Hindus forced you to sit on burning pyre as Sati
Muslims put you behind a permanent curtain
Since antiquity you have been a subject of pity
Countless times you have been dishonoured
As Draupadi in the mehfil full of mighty heads
Or to adjust in the male dominated society
As an article, have to warm up their egos and beds.
Denounce the religion that put you behind bars
As no religion can be supreme over humanity
Break those chains that have crippled your flight
For no bird has been made to be in cage of cruelty
You have been the idol of affection as a mother
Have suffered physical pain, sacrificed the whole life
As daughter and sister, have revered everyone
And left own home to decorate other’s as a wife
Own counterpart of men, how can she be let down
In what field she couldn’t excel and made us all surprise
Worshiped for ages as an epitome of kindness and love
She can also be a “Kali”, horrifying whole sky and abyss
Like a flower of lotus, you have bloomed smiling in dirt
But it’s your right to have a “clean” place of your choice
As customs are made by men, so customs can be broken
Neither religion nor men, but rule of humanity must rejoice.
